We are currently seeking a Genotyping Technician to work onsite with the National Institutes of Health in Rockville, MD .

TASKS. The contractor shall:

  • Design primers for PCR; perform PCR and enzyme reactions; run gel electrophoresis.

  • Use browsers/databases (UCSC, NCBI) for information on the genome, BAC clones and genes.

  • Use equipment such as Tecan robotic workstation, Hydra 96 microdispenser and Q filter.

  • Perform sequencing reactions; run samples on ABI sequencers.

  • Perform genotyping, including PCR; run samples through ABI machines; collect sent size of the fragments and analyze data; map genes/markers by PCR.

  • Analyze and interpret data and prepare summaries of laboratory findings to be used in reports and papers.

  • Train fellows and other laboratory personnel on the techniques, procedures and equipment used in the laboratory.

  • Ensure quality control of the laboratory; maintain equipment.

  • Calibrate and operate instruments used to perform tests, analyses and other laboratory procedures, including ABI sequencers, micro-centrifuges and Tecan Workstation.

  • Perform SNP genotyping for human and mouse DNA using Infinium assay by Illumina.

  • Use iScan (Illumina) to scan, collect the data and score the SNP alleles.

  • Perform set-up and cleanup of DNA sequencing reactions.

  • Operate and maintain Tecan (high throughput liquid transfer) robotics and DNA sequencing instruments.

  • Adhere to laboratory protocols; record results in laboratory notebooks and databases.

  • Provide general laboratory support, including sorting deliveries.

  • Attend weekly laboratory meetings.

  • Maintain highly organized laboratory environment, including the supply of standard reagents and maintaining a safe working environment.

  • Coordinate waste collection, labeling and disposal pick-up.

REQUIREMENTS. The contractor must have:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Biology or a related discipline.

  • Minimum of three (3) years of laboratory experience in general molecular biology.

  • Ability to maintain accurate and detailed records of laboratory experiments.

  • Strong communications skills, both oral and written.

  • Excellent analytical, organizational and time management skills.

  • Ability to multi-task and pay close attention to detail.
