Health and Safety Observer, Midland, MI

12-month contract role via Kelly Services

This role exists to accelerate necessary behavioral changes at the Michigan Operations (MiOps) Facility to help achieve Site safety goals. The Safety Observer (BBP) resource will provide real time mentoring and coaching to Contractors.

Observations will be focused in the following areas:

  • Flawless execution of Life Critical Standards (LCS)

  • Following good ergonomic practices

  • Proper PPE usage for the task.

  • Proper and safe tool usage

  • Proper hand placement and line of fire

  • Slip, trip, fall hazards

  • Working safely in various weather conditions (Thermal stress & cold)

Safety

  • Following all safety rules and expectations as outlined by each plant/facility within MiOps leading by example.

Observations

Conduct observations and interactions in the field 80% of hours allotted focusing on the following:

  • Individuals are following the LCS 100%

  • Safe Work Permitting (SWP)

  • Isolation of Energy (IOE)

  • Elevated Work

  • Confined Space Entry (CSE)

  • Hot Work

  • Electrical Safe Work

  • Line of Equipment Opening (LEO)

  • Hydroblasting & Pressure Washing

  • Proper PPE usage for the task. (Includes Donning/Doffing)

  • Operating equipment and power tools safely.

  • Using and following Safe Work Permits (SWP) or procedures in the field.

  • Hazard recognition and mitigation (including things like hand placement, slip and fall, and ergonomics)

  • Working safely in various weather conditions (Thermal stress & cold)

Interactions / Interventions

  • Build a relationship and mutual respect with personnel you are interacting with on Site.

  • Coach and mentor personnel on the appropriate behaviors in a positive manner to improve safety culture.

  • Use PACE principles when interacting with people. Be willing to intervene (step in, stop work, and point out deficiencies) to ensure safe behaviors and a safe working environment. Just as important, provide positive feedback when others are demonstrating the desired behaviors.

  • Use the conflict resolution process.

  • If personnel are not responsive to your coaching escalate the issue to the H&S Tech, H&S Specialist and a Company safety representative

Performance Tracking & Communication

  • Record observation into the electronic Observation (BBP) Tool

  • Provide updates to the H&S Specialist and Delivery Leader on performance.

  • Escalate identified best practices to H&S Specialist /Delivery Leader so that they can be leveraged across the Site.

  • Escalate identified needs for engineering controls through the H&S Specialist.

Team work

  • Work with Site personnel in resolving safety and behavioral concerns.

Qualifications:

  • Excellent interpersonal skills especially the ability to interact and communicate effectively with individuals of diverse backgrounds and experience

  • Desire 2+ years’ experience in a constructions, maintenance or manufacturing engineering setting

  • Basic Microsoft Office skills (Word, Excel, Outlook)

Educations

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required

Special Role Requirements

  • Overtime Classification 5&2 but includes occasional weekends and off shift

  • Must learn and understand LCS’s

  • Must understand and use proper PPE

  • Must have strong hazard recognition skills

  • Learn, understand and apply PACE principals

  • Effective at providing feedback

  • Role Specific training to be completed:

  • Must complete specific training around the LCS

  • Must complete guest in house for each facility/plant

Special Requirements:

  • Climbing stairs, ladder use, on feet for long periods of time, walking significant amounts each day

  • Work overtime, weekends and off shifts on a periodic and routine basis during peak production times
