Kelly Services Chemist- St. Helens, OR in Deer Island, Oregon

Kelly Scientific is in search of a Chemist to temporarily join a chemical company located in St. Helens, OR. This individual will be responsible for overseeing activities of the plant laboratory, including operation, maintenance, cost, and output of the lab. In addition, develop, improve, implement, and perform lab tests including operating GC and ICP instruments.

This is a temporary position, working M-F 8am-5pm.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Ensure compliance with applicable Company HSE Performance Standards, as well as applicable acts and regulations.

  • Perform all routine and non-routine chemical/physical tests using established test procedures for quality control and environmental/safety control.

  • Participate on behalf of the lab in USEPA National Standards for Water Proficiency Testing Studies.

  • Determine validity of test results using established quality assurance techniques.

  • Participate in cooperative outside cross-check quality assurance programs.

  • Obtain sample and test methods requiring non-routine procedures.

  • Complete all laboratory data management records and maintain electronic database.

  • Update and design programs for the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).

  • Maintain currency of education and qualifications.

  • Maintain and use weather-recording instruments to record rainfall, barometric pressure, temperature, humidity, wind direction, and velocities.

  • Responsible for platinum catalyst preparation, change out of catalyst charge, and change out of precious metals filter.

  • Maintain precious metals inventory records.

  • Maintain in-plant portable laboratory equipment, including gas chromatograph.

  • Maintain, troubleshoot, and repair laboratory gas chromatograph and liquid ion chromatograph, pH meters, sampling equipment, and stations.

  • Work with all levels of Operations personnel to evaluate abnormal plant conditions and remedies.

  • Keep all plant areas apprised of test results on a daily basis for normal results and immediately for out of specification results.

  • Coordinate with outside vendors for some laboratory services.

  • Answer technical questions from Plant engineers and management.

  • Prioritization and delegation of routine and non-routine laboratory activities.

  • Routine supply sourcing and maintenance.

  • Processing of precious metals containing materials.

  • Supervisory requirements related to laboratory personnel (such as vacation requests, work schedules, time sheet review.)

  • Develop and monitor goals for laboratory personnel development.

Job Requirements:

  • BS in Chemistry or related field

  • 2+ years of analytical chemistry experience, including wet chemistry techniques

  • Experience operating and troubleshooting GC and ICP instruments is preferred

  • Thorough knowledge of chemistry and chemical processes

  • Ability to maintain and repair instruments

  • Prior supervisory experience is preferred

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Ability to build strong relationships with internal and external clients

  • Ability to wear and care for applicable personal protective equipment (such as, safety glasses and shoes, respirator, hard hat and ear protection, safety harness) as required by site specific requirements.

  • Ability to moving and lift heavy items (i.e. gas bottles, cases of laboratory chemicals).
