Kelly Services Analytical Chemist - Baltimore, MD in Curtis Bay, Maryland

Kelly Scientific Resources has an exciting Direct Hire opportunity for an Analytical Chemist with XRF and XRD Analyses experience to serve as the technical lead for the X-ray Lab in Baltimore, MD. He/she will ultimately be responsible for the quality and reliability of the data from each instrument and method in their lab. This role ensures current methods are meeting customer needs and develops and validates new test methods. This role also interfaces in support of Operations.

Duties and Responsibilities include:

  • Develop and provide specialized safety training to technicians working in their labs on unique hazards present.

  • Subject matter expert on equipment and methods for their respective areas.

  • Responsible for the quality and reliability of the data from each method and instrument in their lab. Ensure proper SPC and calibration are done. Ensure maintenance is done in collaboration with the Analytical Reliability Coordinator.

  • Serve as the liaison between ASC and designated Operations. Attend weekly plant production meetings. Communicate testing status to the plant and pro-actively identify opportunities for the plants and ASC to work better together by optimizing sample types and frequency.

  • Troubleshoot equipment when problems arise, providing on-call 24/7 support if question arise.

  • Troubleshoot odd results and answer methods and results questions from the customers of the lab results (plant, RT Sales, R&D)

  • Train technicians on the use of lab equipment. Continually improve and develop skills of technicians working in lab area.

  • Responsible for updating existing test methods and writing new test methods as needed to support changes in product chemistry or plant operations.

  • Responsible for validation of new methods and new equipment installed in the lab.

  • Serve as an internal company expert on the tests in their area, understanding the scientific fundamentals of the tests and the limitations of the tests. Provide expertise on test methods as required to other locations.

  • Manage the correlation program between plants for the methods in their area and organize meetings and opportunities for lab staff to share best practices between locations.

  • Manage ISO 9001:2015 compliance for their lab area.

  • Lead specialized testing in their area of expertise as needed to support plant operations and troubleshooting.

  • Keep up with equipment and method advances in their area of responsibility through vendor interaction, external training courses, and self-study.

  • Provide thought leadership and drive continuous improvement in their lab looking for opportunities to improve workflow, equipment, automation and data handling.

  • Responsible for ensuring the correct disposal of hazardous waste generated in their lab.

  • Demonstrated hands on experience in lab with responsibility for data quality and equipment operation.

  • Communication- ability to clearly communicate results and expectations

  • Coaching and mentoring- ability to train others on analytical methods and equipment and continuously develop their skills and level of responsibility.

  • Strong focus on both internal and external customers to deliver the right results at the right time.

Preferred Competencies

  • Commitment to continuous development and increasing their knowledge of analytical methods and equipment.

  • Familiarity with Six Sigma tools. Green Belt or higher preferred.

  • Familiarity with a production manufacturing environment.

  • Prior experience in 24x7 chemical laboratory preferred.

  • Prior experience with PANalytical XRF and XRD instrumentation

Required Experience

  • B.S. or higher in chemistry or analytical chemistry.

  • Demonstrated hands on experience in an analytical lab with responsibility for data quality and equipment operation.

  • Prior experience with XRF and XRD equipment and methods.
